This book introduces and discusses new alliances related to the growth of tourism in Sub-Saharan Africa. The private sector is increasingly involved in inter-sectoral alliances to both capitalise on the growing tourism industry and contribute to wider economic development in the destinations. In this book, a number of cases illustrate the variety of emerging partnerships and some of their consequences, by means of case studies from Kenya, Uganda, Botswana, Namibia and South Africa.

René van der Duim is Special Professor Tourism and Sustainable Development at Wageningen University, the Netherlands, where he teaches on the relation between tourism, globalisation and sustainable development. He holds a PhD in Social Sciences for his dissertation on the relation between tourism, sustainable development and actor-network theory. His current research interest focuses on the relation between tourism, conservation and development in sub-Saharan Africa.
