The biennial (international) conference organised by the Dutch reading foundation is called reading and watching and was held on 21 November 2008. For 20 years now, the Dutch reading foundation has been a successful factor in the promotion of (literary) reading. It is a generally recognised fact that the ability to read is important for development and social success. The fact that intensive reading improves your reading proficiency and your vocabulary is widely accepted as well. However, other effects have been ascribed to reading (literature).

'I would very much like my child to grow up bilingual. But I am afraid that speaking two languages in the home would be confusing. Where can I get some advice?'

A few wooden artifacts, densely decorated with enigmatic figures, are all that remains of what at one time was the writing system of Easter Island. Ever since its discovery to the rest of the world in the 19th century, this rongorongo has resisted all attempts at decipherment. It is the intention of this book to show that it constitutes nothing less than a fully developed script.
