Backcasting: looking back from a desirable future. Since the 1990s sustainable futures have been explored in backcasting experiments, numerous stakeholders have been involved and first steps have been planned in line with the envisioned sustainable futures. But what is the impact of these so-called backcasting experiments ten years later?

The research presented in this thesis introduces TrAcEs and FoRcEs as control-software design methods to model autonomous traffic agents using shared infrastructures. This method is supported by a workbench that provides software components which facilitate rapid development of safe, exible, agile, and scalable, traffic control systems in a modern programming language.

In this thesis we have developed a new dynamic O-D matrix estimator that is founded on a behavioural basis. This estimator is able to produce a statistically sound timedependent OD trip table estimate given flow observations and an apriori trip table, such that the estimated dynamic OD flows are consistent with dynamic assignment predictions of network flows based on the estimated dynamic OD table.

For the development of autonomously working systems, low-cost and small-size sensors are required to provide the system with information from the environment. Therefore these sensors are often integrated on-chip. This thesis describes different through-wafer interconnect methods, intended to be applicable to most sensors and actuator devices.

“Stability of offshore risers conveying fluid” concentrates on the influence of internal flow on stability of pipes conveying fluid. The book covers both (semi-) analytical and experimental work. The book starts with the explanation of the one-dimensional equation of motion, standard solution techniques and energy considerations of a pipe conveying fluid. In subsequent chapters, more complicated systems are dealt with, including theoretical models of submerged offshore risers conveying fluid.
